I am so pleased to see this post.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2005 transatlantic race I sailed on &#8216;Tempest&#8221; and we used the same weather router who steered Olivier around the world. He was brilliant.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><a title=\"Permanent Link to ultime warrior\" href=\"http:\/\/sailinganarchy.com\/2014\/03\/17\/ultime-warrior\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">ultime warrior<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dlo9dp2r69urx.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-Shot-2014-03-17-at-7.48.34-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sodebo Ultime Trimaran (ex Geronimo)\" src=\"http:\/\/dlo9dp2r69urx.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-Shot-2014-03-17-at-7.48.34-AM.png\" width=\"550\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At 111 feet long and 72 feet wide, the old VPLP\u00a0<em>Gerononimo\u00a0<\/em>was a groundbreaking racer in many ways. When Olivier De Kersauson launched her back in 2001, record breakers like Fossett and Peyron and Lewis were positive that giant catamarans were just better, and they\u2019d proven it so clearly that many thought De Kersauson a nutter for risking so much on a boat that clearly couldn\u2019t accomplish anything. \u00a0But 100,000 mostly trouble-free miles and a Jules Verne (and several other) major records later, the boat\u2019s clear advantages \u2013 safety, ability to be driven hard, motion, upwindedness \u2013 emphatically ended the era of the maxi-catamaran. \u00a0<em>Geronimo\u00a0<\/em>would become the basis for the most dominant record runners ever, as well as the boat that took the America\u2019s Cup back from Alinghi: Franck Cammas\u2019 (and now Armel Le Cle\u2019ach\u2019s) monstrous\u00a0<em>Groupama 2\/BP6<\/em>, Lionel Lemonchois\u2019s (and then Loick Peyron, and now Yann and Dona\u2019s)\u00a0<em>BP5\/Spindrift 2,\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<em>BMW Oracle Racing 90<\/em>\u00a0all came out of VPLP\u2019s computers and all owe their heritage heavily and directly to\u00a0<em>Geronimo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This history lesson may bore some, but to us, ocean racing is all about history and legend, and that\u2019s why we share it with you. \u00a0And with 2014\/15 seeing Thomas Coville rebuilding, refitting, repowering, and restoring\u00a0<em>Geronimo\u00a0<\/em>for his own Route Du Rhum, record aspirations, and\u00a0<em>Ultime<\/em>\u00a0solo 100+ footer class racing, we can\u2019t wait to see history come roaring to life again on the starting line. \u00a0Coville was just a kid when he first began racing with De Kersauson, and the brilliant Frenchman has now been part of most of the last decade\u2019s Jules Verne Trophy runs as well as a Volvo Ocean Race victory. \u00a0His narrow Nigel Irens\u00a0<em>Sodebo<\/em>\u00a0trimaran came tantalizingly close to claiming the Solo RTW record, but it\u2019s clear that Coville has given up on that concept in favor of the heavier and far more powerful\u00a0<em>Geronimo. \u00a0<\/em>Above is an Yvan Zedda shot of the boat as her refit moves ahead quickly at Multiplast\u2019s yard; go\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.10152262948604264.1073741866.261757749263&amp;type=1\">here for a full gallery<\/a>, here<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Copied from Sailing anarchy.
