The changes in sailing had been on the horizon for a while. The turning point we can all point to was the last America’s Cup with foiling catamarans. In the Vendee Globe, the boats which have foils are clearly faster.

I believe I read that Joyon cut the jig down on Idec for this attempt; making it an easier boat to handle. Just look at the numbers he is putting up.

WILD KINGDOM

Today at Point Reyes, we were witness to a most extraordinary event. We had gone to see the Elephant Seals. Then by the side of the road a wolf which was stalking a herd of deer had the tables turned. The deer attacked the wolf; chasing it away from the herd. The standoff lasted a while; long enough for me to take these photographs.

We often think of deer like bambi. Here was proof that it is not the case.

THE SALTON SEA

THE SALTON SEA is reputedly 230 feet below sea level. Death valley is 279 feet below sea level. It is a curious place that shares some quirks with Mono lake. It was created in 1907 when the Colorado river overflowed; and dying a slow death ever since. Still a resting place for many migrating birds.

BREAKING THE TOP OF THE MAST

Tanguy de lamotte broke the top of his mast off one week into the vendee globe around the world race. We had the top of the mast break off in the 2012 Bermuda race. Fortunately we were able to finish with a reef.

Thomas Coville is, after 8 days of sailing almost a day ahead of the singlehanded around the world record.

GEORGE COUMANTAROS 1922-2016

Just two weeks ago Jim Kilroy (Kialoa) passed away. More recently George Coumantaros. It is truly the end of an era. Some of my fondest memories sailing were aboard “Boomerang”. azzura5539-3 boomerang721 coumantaros550 coumantaros551 coumantaros552 coumantarous910 jane225
