If you follow sailing, then you know that the start of the mini transat was delayed and the first leg abandoned. I have listened and read many peoples opinions about how to grow sailing. I think the essence of the argument misses the point.

NEW RECORD AND OVER EARLY
Francois Joyon has broken the singlehanded transatlantic record by over 16 hours. The new record is 5 days 2 hours 56 minutes and 10 seconds; not quite setting a new 24 hour record in the process.
Yesterday I was called over the line early on a start. Traffic was heavy so I was watching the bowman. As you see he has his thumb up (the red and yellow boat). I won’t argue for a moment that we were on the line but the boat to leeward was bow out on us. Oh well, as the saying goes ” you’re not trying unless you’re over on occasion”.
NEW ATLANTIC RECORD LIKELY
Francois Joyon and IDEC are 220 mile ahead of the record with 51 miles to go. So chances are good that he will break the record, becoming the holder of 4 records: singledhanded transatlantic, route de la decouverte, 24 hours singlehanded (662 miles), singlehanded around the world.
Final day of the NYYC spring regatta, another glorious day.
WEEKEND SAILING
Today is the Round the Island race the unofficial official beginning of the NYYC Spring regatta. The weather is improving. Three days of intense sailing.
Francois Joyon aboard “IDEC” is 140 miles behind the record set by Thomas Coville, but the weather system looks promising. The kind of sailing Joyon is doing makes a statement like the one I made about intense sound a bit silly.

The search for speed under sail has captured man’s mind since the first time he set sail. The tea clipper “Cutty Sark” was the speed demon of her time. “Amaryllis” designed by Nat Herreshoff in 1876, the precursor to the catamarans that are racing for the America’s Cup now.
If Vlad Murnikov is successful, and there is no reason that he will not be, it will be the next step forward for monohulls.

Sailrockethas raised the bar once again. 65 knots over 500 meters. I do not see anyone else eclipsing their accomplishments any time soon. Particularly since they are not finished. The program is finally dialed in.
We had our first snow today. Not much, but enough to signal winter.
