THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AND AN ALLEY OF TREES

I don’t think it is possible to take a bad photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge. I never saw an alley of trees that I didn’t like. I have quite literally hundreds of thousands of images spanning more than 50 years, of almost any subject you can think of. Those that pre-date digital cameras, I have been scanning and saving to a hard drive(s). Each photograph is connected to a memory or a feeling or thought. The photo is a tag if you like to find that memory. My goal is to express the most complete thought in a single image. Naturally there are moments when video is better, but I am committed to the effort of capturing the whole in a single image. Click: HERE to go to my photography website.

ORDINARY PEOPLE, EVERYDAY LIVES

While in Los Angeles we had lunch with a good friend in Malibu. We found the environment there uncomfortable, at least for us. Since I carry a camera all the time I had many people question if I was a paparazzi, and seemed truly disappointed when I replied that I was not. Apparently, a little later, some genuine paparazzi did appear; from their looks in my direction they were concerned that I was competition. Evidently, lots of movie stars or other famous people often go there for lunch. This is the lure of being there for many.

I am out of step, as I was seeking the unusual among the usual; the ordinary that stands out. It is not always as easy as looking at a movie star; but for me more rewarding

I GUESS I AM PUBLISHED

Earlier this year I spent several days photographing Bill Jacklin in his studio. Actually I was photographing his paintings for the Marlborough Gallery. Once the inventory photographs were done, Bill went back to work and I continued to photograph while we talked. Bill can talk and work quite well.

The inventory helped the gallery decide which paintings would be exhibited and how. This show took place in February in New York. I photographed the opening as well.

I had great fun taking all the photographs. Even more pleased that my photograph of Bill ended up in the book Interviews with Artists 1966-2012 written by Michael Peppiatt.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I have carried a camera for many years now. Most of the photographs in my posts are photos that I have taken. While most of my writing is about sailing, I am no less fascinated by the rest of the world. That said I am able to tie almost any conversation I am in somehow back to sailing.

I have created a photography web site: stephenlirakisphotography.net  where you will find photos from many places and times. I am adding to it constantly.

ON SUNDAY

I have spent many weekends and more sailing, away from my wife and family. There is not a great deal of reason to regret. One can not undo the past. Frankly, I loved the sailing, but it did come at a price. It is something I did which was self centered. It did not include my family.

From time to time I do things with my wife away from the water. There are moments I feel like a duck out of water; but I never regret our sojourns. It has broadened my life.

Today, was one of those moments. A visit to the Sakonnet Gardens. And some idle wandering taking photographs all the time.
