{"id":3830,"date":"2012-07-11T09:13:43","date_gmt":"2012-07-11T14:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephenlirakis.com\/?p=3830"},"modified":"2012-07-11T09:13:43","modified_gmt":"2012-07-11T14:13:43","slug":"jury-decision-carina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephenlirakis.com\/?p=3830","title":{"rendered":"JURY DECISION FOR &#8220;CARINA&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Newport\u00a0Bermuda Jury Penalizes\u00a0Carina<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By John Rousmaniere<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NEWPORT,\u00a0R.I., July 9, 2012-\u00a0The International Jury for the 2012 Newport Bermuda\u00a0Race has penalized the yacht\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u00a015\u00a0minutes\u00a0in elapsed time because a professional sailor briefly steered the boat during\u00a0the race. The rules of the St. David\u2019s Lighthouse\u00a0Division in which\u00a0<em>Carina\u00a0<\/em>sailed (and which the boat won) require\u00a0that only amateur sailors steer while racing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ruling does not affect\u00a0the race standings. The penalty trims\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0margin over the second-place St. David\u2019s Lighthouse\u00a0boat, the U.S. Naval\u00a0Academy\u2019s\u00a0<em>Defiance<\/em>, to 16 minutes, 22\u00a0seconds from 34 minutes, 34 seconds.\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u00a0also remains winner\u00a0of Class 3 under the IRC rule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The International Jury\u00a0made its decision after a hearing on Sunday, July 8, in which\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u2019s owner and captain, Rives Potts\u00a0(Westbrook, Conn.), participated.\u00a0The Jury determined that\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u2019s crew list as provided by Potts before the race listed all of\u00a0the\u00a0boat\u2019s 12 crewmembers as Category 1 amateur sailors under the International\u00a0Sailing Federation (ISAF) sailor classification code.\u00a0The rules for the St.\u00a0David\u2019s Lighthouse Division\u00a0permit a boat\u00a0the size of\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>, a 48-foot sloop, to\u00a0have as many as three\u00a0professional sailors in the crew with the condition that\u00a0none of them steer while the boat is racing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u2019s crew was Kit Will, whose ISAF\u00a0Category 1 classification had expired in April 2010. Two days before the race\u00a0start, Will applied to ISAF and was classified as a Category 3 professional\u00a0sailor. (There is no Category 2 in the ISAF code.) Will\u00a0did not inform Potts\u00a0that he had been reclassified as a Category 3 until after\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u00a0finished the race in Bermuda.\u00a0\u00a0By then\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u00a0had been presented with the Corinthian Trophy for top boat with an\u00a0all-amateur crew. Potts\u00a0returned the trophy to the Bermuda\u00a0Race Organizing Committee, which runs the\u00a0race for the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Potts\u00a0filed a report with the\u00a0International Jury in which he stated that\u00a0Will had briefly steered\u00a0<em>Carina<\/em>\u00a0during the race.
