Saturday field trip, stopping by the Slater Mill on the way to the Worcester Art Museum. A wonderful gem, with a fine collection; small but rivaling the collection of any of those of the “great” museums.

VENDEE GLOBE

The VENDEE GLOBE non-stop singlehanded race around the world is only a few days old and 4 boats are out. the latest is Sam Davies, dismasted last night. All the competitors are safe, but we are all certainly asking where have we gone in yacht design. It may be an extreme case, but Olin Stephens stated many times that he considered the direction yacht design was taking was unseaworthy. A keel sheared off, a collision with a fishing boat, and a dismasting.

URI TEAM, NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS, MIKE FENTON, STEPHEN LIRAKIS, TOM DYKSTRA, SKIP WHYTE, HENRY BOSSETT, NED CASWELL

My post today is the result of some of these photos being sent to me by Henry Bossett. It is moments like this when one stops and counts the years. It is now a long time ago. 1970? We won almost everything. We had a good time doing it, or at least I did.

I had a conversation today with another college sailing mate, Bill Johnson, we were reminiscing about bygone days on Salt Pond. If you haven’t remarked yet; we look a little rag tag, certainly compared to today’s college sailing.

PATH OF DESTRUCTION

It is reports like this that “almost” make us feel guilty to have dodged a bullet.

56 KNOTS, PAUL LARSEN AND SAILROCKET

For all of you who know Paul and Helena; you know how long they have been working towards this. We are all pulling for them.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND JOHN LA FARGE

My last visit to the Congregational church was nearly twenty years ago. The fact that the interior had not deteriorated more is a blessing. Personally I like John La Farge’s stained glass better than Tiffany. The relationship between Tiffany and La Farge was tempestuous at best.

The Prayer Rug was the basis for the decoration. The idea was to avoid any idolatry, so geometric aesthetism was the solution. This is I believe the only complete work of both the stain glass and frescos by John La Farge anywhere.

James Yarnell, has written the definitive work on John La Farge.

THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AND AN ALLEY OF TREES

THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE FROM THE HEADLANDS

I don’t think it is possible to take a bad photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge. I never saw an alley of trees that I didn’t like. I have quite literally hundreds of thousands of images spanning more than 50 years, of almost any subject you can think of. Those that pre-date digital cameras, I have been scanning and saving to a hard drive(s). Each photograph is connected to a memory or a feeling or thought. The photo is a tag if you like to find that memory. My goal is to express the most complete thought in a single image. Naturally there are moments when video is better, but I am committed to the effort of capturing the whole in a single image. Click: HERE to go to my photography website.

JERSEY SHORE

what can we do to help?

“SON OF SANDY”

I am not complaining, frankly we did not have much trouble. We lost power for a time but National Grid went right to work and I am back online. There was not the storm surge that existed with Sandy; but maybe more wind and for longer. Because this storm was classified as a nor’easter the approach by public safety and everyone else was markedly different. More relaxed, was my impression.

Fir those in New York and New Jersey this was an insult to an already grave injury. The recovery for those areas will take years.
