As pretty as any city in the East.

JERUSALEM ON EASTER
What destination could be more appropriate than Jerusalem on Easter. In our case, a spur of the moment day trip, was to Jerusalem, Rhode Island; opposite Galilee both fishing villages. The last time I had been here was during my college years. There are clearly more weekend houses, much more elaborate than the simple fishing shacks of my youth. Still however, one gets the sense that life here is as still as the protected waters of Salt pond.
HIDDEN TREASURES OF NEWPORT
The Seaman’s Church Institute quietly does it’s stated task on the Newport waterfront. Lost in the surrounding activity of everyday. Situated in an area of downtown Newport where most people come to shop, eat or drink. It is a harbour of refuge.
The Aloha grill offers wholesome food in a pleasant environment.
VJ DAY in Rhode Island
Today is VJ Day in Rhode Island (victory over Japan) Rhode Island is the last state in the union to celebrate such a holiday. I must assume that this is one of the more politically incorrect holidays to still exist.
I have the hope that the real reason for observing this holiday is exactly that observing a holiday. I believe that today the beaches in Rhode Island are free and packed.
4TH OF JULY
Bermuda Race start 3 days away
The Bermuda Race is only 600 miles, 4 days should be an ample window for me on a 50 foot boat. Somehow there are always so many loose ends to tie up before the start. The weather at the moment looks like a nice close reach start, running out of wind at the Gulf Stream.
I chose to pre clear customs, which may mean I am, if someone chose to look at paperwork, in Bermuda right now. It took awhile as I was not the only one with that idea. All of Belle Mente’s crew were in front of me, including Tom Mclaughlin.
Once accomplished, I wanted to stop at Team One for last minute errands, I stopped by the Sparkman & Stephens office, which is now home to two of the designers. On the way I noticed an aircraft carrier under the Newport Bridge. I did a double take at that. It seems the Forrestal is being moved south and will become a museum in another port.
I am still hoping to hear from former 12 meter sailors who would be willing to share photos and stories of their experiences.
16 INCHES OF RAIN
Route 95 in Warwick is closed. Colony ford along the highway is under 10 feet of water. This is a new record for rainfall for the month of March. Not exactly the kind of record anyone was hoping for. Some people in Cranston may never be able to move back into their houses.
burning calories
We had snow storm of the winter, starting last night into today, wind up to 50 knots. It seemed to me that we had 2 feet and drifts up to my chest, always just where I needed to shovel. For those who wanted a white christmas, their wish was granted. Ski country got only a dusting as it was a coastal storm, the same one that hit Virginia, New York, and on up the coast.
LOUIS HAZARD
You do not see characters like this any more. Each generation sees a change in our cultural physiognomy. Just look back at films over the decades, if you need further proof. It was a chance encounter, I had my camera with me, I asked louie if I might take his photograph. He responded ” Let me stand next to my machine”
shooting in Cody
A few years ago I was invited to be part of the Windigo shooting team competing in Cody, Wyoming. The team was comprised of some very notable shooters, including the Olympic shooting coach.
