Just by coincidence, my son gifted me at Christmas with the audio book of “Endurance.” I had read it years ago, but even today it is positively harrowing just to listen to that telling of the story. At each stage — frozen in the ice, in tents on the floes, nearly freezing to death on the trip to Elephant Island, making the 800-mile trip in the James Cairn by the narrowest of margins, getting ashore, and finally crossing the island just before a storm — the odds were tens or hundreds to one. But they made it. A great read and an even better listen.
