STORMS, WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Never mind that most of the US has been buried with snow and cold.  (Don’t forget the blizzard of ’78) Northeastern Australia hit by the powerful cyclone “Yasi” with winds of 175 knots. In an area that is still in recovery from unprecedented floods.

We are witness to history in Egypt, a storm of another kind. What has caused these events? I entered  the 21st century wondering what the future held. So far this has been such an active moment in time I am hardly able to put it all into perspective.

I can only hope that the right thing will happen in Cairo.

What more can one say?  This winter has not been kind to anyone living on the east coast.

Last night at the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport it was announced that the “J” class will sail a regatta here in the summer. Elegant, heavy and powerful.

SNOW IN 49 STATES

There is snow in 49 states today; only Florida does not have snow.

burning calories

We had snow storm of the winter, starting last night into today, wind up to 50 knots. It seemed to me that we had 2 feet and drifts up to my chest, always just where I needed to shovel. For those who wanted a white christmas, their wish was granted. Ski country got only a dusting as it was a coastal storm, the same one that hit Virginia, New York, and on up the coast.

The Morning After

It snowed all day long today adding at least another inch the the total. We received about 9 inches as of this morning. The wind never materialized, amazing considering the weather map. I shoveled a total of about 12 hours, certainly burns calories, although I can think of more amusing ways to do it.

First Real Snow

This afternoon the snow started as predicted. Several inches an hour, no wind yet. Not particularly cold. Tomorrow morning will tell the whole story.

Yesterday I spent some time with a group who are trying to leave Newport for Florida. Naturally the suggestion was that they hold off this weekend and start watching the weather forecasts for a window of 48-72 hours; about as much as you might hope for at this time of the year. If they can get to Norfolk, the rest of the trip is easy. It it this first few hundred miles that is trying.
