The Capetown to Rio race has historically been long and slow; generally a light air race. The 2014 race is proving to be anything but that. A number of boats from the 34 starters have withdrawn and one crew has died.

COLD, SNOW AND ARCTIC MIST
It should be no surprise to anyone who has watched or listened to the news that New England was hit with the first large snow storm of the year.The bitter stinging cold was more the issue than the snow. Arctic mist only occurs when it is really cold, the ocean water is evaporates when the difference in temperature is great enough.

AMERICA’S CUP 34 LOOKING BACK
The America’s Cup 34 will be remembered for many reasons. Perhaps the most significant is that it has defined sailing going forward. It will be the historical reference of the change from what was and what will be. Indeed the fulfillment of Russell Coutts prediction of the Flintstone generation and the Facebook generation.
I have stated before and will state again, the next Olympics, not the upcoming event, there will be at least one foiling class if not two.

Dog beds throughout history have been sometimes fantasy follies. Man’s best friend deserves pampering.
“CORONET” NEW YEAR’S EVE
An update of “Coronet” on New Year’s Eve. The framing is finished, the keelson is installed and the planking is underway. She is starting to look like a boat.
SHADOWS OF THE PAST
One can find them all over the world, abandoned ships; from star boats and lightnings; to schooners and square riggers. The legacy of the sea. Even the majestic “J” class could be found for years in the mud. The last Oracle IACC is to be broken up. “Independence” the 12 meter was cut up many years ago; as was Thomas Lawson’s “Independence” was launched in May and cut up in September.
CHRISTMAS PAST
Reflection as another year comes to a close. I have been scanning old negatives and the memories of past Christmases with family and friends are captured in these images. One by one they accumulate until it is full and round. Warmed by the good memories that drown out the bad.
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
I was there quite by accident; filling in for another photographer who could not make it to the party. The guests did their best to make me feel uncomfortable; with humor. It worked; for both sides of the camera. The harder they tried, the better the photo moments. My recollection was that it was billed as The Drag Queen Ball.
Last night someone asked me for a photo from this night; which triggered a search and then a post.
