Egypt’s most ancient maritime harbor in Suez discovered

A French-Egyptian archaeological mission discovered the oldest commercial harbor from the fourth dynasty King Khufu (Cheops) at Wadi Al-Jarf area, 180 km south of Suez. On the Red Sea shore at Wadi Al-Jarf area along the Suez-Zaafarana road, a French-Egyptian archaeological mission from the French Institute for Archaeological Studies (IFAO) stumbled upon what it believed to be the most ancient harbor ever found in Egypt. The harbor goes back to the time of the fourth dynasty King Khufu. The harbor is considered one of the most important commercial ports where trading trips to export copper and other minerals from Sinai were launched. A collection of vessel anchors carved in stone was also discovered as well as different docks. Minister of State for Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim announced that a collection of 40 papyri, showing details of daily life of ancient Egyptians during the 27th year of King Khufu’s reign, was also unearthed during excavation. “These are the oldest papyri ever found in Egypt,” asserted Ibrahim. He also stated that these papyri are very important because they reveal more information about the ancient Egyptians’ daily life. |

The Boston Marathon, the oldest marathon in the world, the first being in 1897. normally a celebration of spring. We don’t know where to turn. Sad, heartfelt prayers for those in peril.

SHAPE OF SPEED
We forget quickly how our reference of the shape of speed under sail was shaped. Last night Rich Wilson (see yesterday’s post) referred to the fact that his boat was 30% slower than the boat that ultimately won the Vendee Globe Race.
“Shadow” was Nat Herreshoff’s first design, while he was still a student at MIT; I believe. She was unbeaten over a period of years.
“Mabel” reflects a period in time when racing catboats was at fever pitch.
“Shonia” belonged to Charlie Barr, she looks pretty racy.
“Shamrock” tha America’s Cup challenger in 1903, The crew lived aboard, she was the best guess at what would be fast enough to win the Cup.
ALL THE RIGHT REASONS
Tonight I listened to Rich Wilson speak about his adventure of sailing the Vendee Globe race. The occasion was the 30th anniversary of Lift Raft and Survival Equipment, begun by Jim O’Oconnor.
Rich knew he would not and could not win the race but embraced the adventure. Quite apart from the gripping story of the race itself was how surprised, mystified he was by the French people. He learned something about himself because he was open to see what was around him.
His adventure was for all the right reasons.

Regardless of my personal feelings. There is no turning back from the future. Already, what was new and revolutionary, is now normal and expected. Speed thrills no doubt about it.
Since the beginning of time man has sought to go faster, somehow, we have found a logic to deny this. Herreshoff designs both power and sail were always focused on speed. The triple expansion engine and narrow power boats.
