Team Luna Rossa Challenge announces its withdrawal from the 35th America’s Cup

(April 2, 2015) – The result of the vote proposed by the America’s Cup Event Authority with the agreement of the Defender of the 35th America’s Cup has overturned, with a majority vote, the America’s Cup Class Rule for the boat with which this edition will be held; this happened notwithstanding the fact that such rule had been previously adopted unanimously by the teams and was in force since June 2014.

Following a careful evaluation of the serious implications of this unprecedented initiative, Team Luna Rossa confirms that it will withdraw from the 35th America’s Cup.

Team Luna Rossa indeed considers illegitimate the procedure adopted and founded on an evident abuse of process by surreptitious use of procedures to modify the Protocol in order to overturn the Class Rule, which instead requires the unanimity of the teams entered.

This is an attempt to introduce boats that are substantially monotypes and in total contrast with the ultra-centennial tradition of the America’s Cup, not to mention a two-month extension period to introduce further modifications to the rules, decided by the majority.

All of the above contributes to a lack of credibility and uncertain technical grounds for what should instead be the most sophisticated sailing competition in the world.

This radical change also implies a waste of important resources already invested based on the rules that were sanctioned in June last year. This means that the claim to reduce costs reveals itself as a pure pretext aimed to annihilate research and development achievements of some teams, and to favor instead preconceived technical and sporting positions by means of changing the most important element in the competition, the boat.

As a confirmation of this, it is important to underline the fact that Luna Rossa frequently advanced proposals aimed at containing costs that however would not have changed the nature of the boats, but these proposals have systematically been rejected by the Defender.

Team Luna Rossa has also taken into consideration the possibility to protest through the Arbitration Panel as foreseen by the Protocol; it has however noted that, ten months after signing the Protocol, the Defender is only now initiating the first formal procedures to compose this important body. This fact contributes to making the entire governance of the Event even less credible and reliable.

Team Luna Rossa regrets the repercussions that this difficult decision will have on the members of the Team – although it will honor all of its contractual obligations – and on the sailing event planned to take place in Cagliari next June and obviously understands the disappointment of the many fans who have supported Luna Rossa during the last four editions of the America’s Cup.

(Editor’s note: The AC World Series was to have four events in 2015, with the first event to be June 4-7 in Cagliari, Italy. That event is now cancelled.)

Patrizio Bertelli declared: “I want to thank the whole team for its hard work during this past year; regretfully this effort has been frustrated by this manoeuvre that is unprecedented in the history of the America’s Cup.

“However, in sports, as in life, one cannot always go for compromise, after compromise, after compromise; sometimes it is necessary to make decisions that are painful but must be clear cut, as only these can make everybody aware of the drifts of the system and therefore set the basis for the future: respect of legality and sportsmanship”.


Italian sailing team will operate from Alameda for America’s Cup

ALAMEDA — The Italian sailing team Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 will be based in Alameda as it competes on San Francisco Bay for the 34th America’s Cup this summer, the second team to be based in the city, officials announced Monday.

Luna Rossa, which represents the Circolo della Vela Sicilia Yacht Club, will join Sweden’s Artemis Racing at Alameda Point, or the former Alameda Naval Air Station.

Luna Rossa, or “red moon” in Italian, will lease a 65,400-square-foot former aircraft hangar for the next seven months, city officials said.

“Alameda is an excellent location that will allow us to operate quickly and efficiently,” Antonio Marrai, logistics manager for Luna Rossa, said in a release. “Even though we will race from Pier 30-32 in San Francisco starting in July, we will keep our base in Alameda.”

The terms of the lease were not immediately available. But the announcement that Luna Rossa would set up in Alameda comes just a day before the City Council will consider renewing the lease for Artemis Racing for up to one year at 1050 West Tower Ave.

Along with providing a 110,561-square-foot former hangar, the lease will allow the Swedish team to use 22,604 square feet of former aircraft taxiway and portions of the Seaplane Lagoon at the former military base. The city has already entered into an agreement with the Navy for access to the lagoon.

The base monthly rent for Artemis will be $23,400 between January and May 30, and $25,000 from June until the lease expires. If the team remains in Alameda and does not use the taxiway or lagoon, the rent will drop to $21,600 each month.

Artemis represents the Royal Swedish Yacht Club and initially signed a one-year lease in May last year.

Fashion house Prada is sponsoring Luna Rossa at reportedly $55.2 million. Patrizio Bertelli, Prada’s chief executive officer, launched the team in 1997 under the name Prada Challenge to compete in America’s Cup 2000. Lusa Rossa also participated in 2003 and 2007, when the Italians reached the Louis Vuitton Cup final for challengers before losing to Team New Zealand.

“2013 is the ‘Year of Italian Culture in the U.S.,’ and we are very proud of Luna Rossa’s participation in the America’s Cup,” said Mauro Battocchi, the consul general of Italy in San Francisco. “Italy is a nation of sailors and sailing is very popular with the Italian public. Italy will follow the America’s Cup step by step and we do hope for a great performance.”

Christopher Seiwald, chair of Alameda’s Ad Hoc Committee for the America’s Cup, said the two teams will boost the local economy, noting that as an island the city has a strong sailing community and many maritime-related businesses.

Both Luna Rossa and Artemis Racing are taking on defender Oracle Team USA of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. Emirates Team New Zealand is also competing.

Technical and sporting cooperation with Emirates Team New Zealand

The Circolo della Vela Sicilia of Palermo and the team Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 announce that their Notice of Challenge for the 34th America’s Cup, which will be held at San Francisco in September 2013, has been accepted by the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 and Emirates Team New Zealand have signed a cooperation agreement until 31st December 2012 which includes full access to all ETNZ design and performance data for this period. The hulls for the Luna Rossa AC72’ will be built in Italy and all other elements will be built in New Zealand in close cooperation with Emirates Team New Zealand.

Luna Rossa’s 2012 programme includes the opening of a base in Auckland (New Zealand) for the joint training, the participation in all events of the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) with the AC 45’ wing catamarans and the launch of the AC 72’ wing catamaran for the America’s Cup.

From March 2013 the team Luna Rossa will continue its sporting preparation and technical development of the AC 72’ in San Francisco and will participate to all events scheduled for the 34th America’s Cup.

The team Luna Rossa was established in 1997 by Patrizio Bertelli with the original name of “Prada Challenge for the America’s Cup 2000”. At its first attempt the team wins the Louis Vuitton Cup – the challengers’ selection series – in 2000, with a record of 38 victories over 49 races. Luna Rossa has participated also in 2003 and in 2007 it reached the Louis Vuitton Cup final. Luna Rossa is currently participating in the Extreme Sailing Series, the Extreme 40’ catamarans circuit, where it is leading the overall standings.

Emirates Team New Zealand is the current holder of the Louis Vuitton Cup and is leading the America’s Cup World Series. Established in 1985 as the New Zealand Challenge, Emirates Team New Zealand has won both the America’s Cup twice and the Louis Vuitton Cup twice. It also participates in the Audi Med Cup and Extreme Sailing Series international racing circuits and will be at the start of the 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race with the yacht CAMPER.

The Circolo della Vela Sicilia, founded in 1933, is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs of the Mediterranean. Its club house is in Mondello, a few kilometres from the centre of Palermo. Throughout the years the Circolo della Vela Sicilia hosted many prestigious national and international regattas, including the J 24 and Star Class European Championships, the Italian Olympic classes Championship and the “Palermo – Monte Carlo” offshore race.
