  1. I guess one question would be, what if someone just took all of the pictures that you posted, pulled off your watermark and reused them? There has to be some level of protection and some level of freedom (right, people should be able to freely have a conversation online about your photos). I don’t know if PIPA and SOPA did or didn’t get it right but I wonder if – without some level of protection – eventually legitimate commercial IP will have to start moving off the web and we may actually see a step backwards in communication?

  2. Granted that some level of copy right/trade mark protection is to be desired, the bills as presented give the Govt virtually unlimited power to close down a “violater” with , as I understand it, no redress, no warning, and on the basis of the word of unidentified complainants. It sounds like a high tech Star Chamber, but one motivated by money, and possibly, by political agendas.

  3. It’s complicated.
I know, that is not an answer, but it is hugely complicated. Once the Government gets involved, it will end up like the tax code, and I don’t think anyone wants that, although I don’t think it should be left to grow wild, either.

I think some of the problem stems from greed – for instance the record industry, in my opinion is, or maybe rather was, the face of greed, and very corrupt. We may be charged in the neighborhood of 12-15 dollars for Music CDs. Why? because they can, or perhaps could. On the other hand, Movies are priced much more reasonably, Gail buys them constantly for 5 – 7 dollars, and we have hundreds. My argument is that while these cheaper-to-buy movies may cost tens, or maybe hundreds of millions to make, a Music CD Professionally produced is closer to 10’s or hundreds of thousands. And now garage band can produce one for peanuts.
After a year or so, Movies are marked down, Music, not. With cheap internet sites, itunes, YouTube and the like, a whole new day has dawned. No longer do we have Justin Beaver and Mariah Cary crammed down our throats because the record industry runs the show. (well, maybe you do if you still listen to broadcast radio). With the Internet we realize there is a whole new world of very talented people we would never have known existed who can make great music and don’t need to pay protection to the record industry. And we can actually find them, thanks to Pandora, Sirius, and their very own websites. My take on this comparison is that if you price this copyrighted property reasonably, you actually DO make it up in volume.

So, as in the Stock Market, Pigs get Slaughtered.

I’m sorry, was this an attempt at an answer, or just a rant? 8^)

  4. My grandaughter would say it is complicated, and she would be correct. There is no simple answer. I have to admit that access to search engines makes progress with course development so much easier. Bill
