2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the launching and first successful defense by the 12 meter “Intrepid”. It also marks the second successful defense by the 12 meter “Courageous”. Each boat successfully defended the America’s Cup twice. Only one other boat can lay claim to that fact. That was “Columbia” 1899 & 1901. She is no longer with us.
THE TRANSATLANTIC RACE OF 1975 STARTED IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND FINISHING IN COWES IOW. WEALD WAS A SWAN 48 DESIGNED BY S&S. A BOAT IN MY OPINION THAT WAS FASTER THAN “CARINA” IN THAT ERA.
THIS WAS ONE OF 9 TRANSATLANTIC RACES I HAVE COMPETED IN. EACH WITH IT’S OWN SPECIAL MEMORIES. ADDITIONALLY AN EXCEPTIONAL PRIVILEGE TO COMMUNE WITH NATURE IN A WAY PERMITTED TO ONLY A FEW.

The film produced by NBC sports is well done and a perspective I had not previously considered.
My fondest memories of college life are really are those of sailing and the broad community of all the colleges we competed against.
The format that of exciting sailing which afforded the opportunity to develop and sharpen our skills; but I am still racing with or against many of those I knew in college.
A WONDERFUL WEEKEND OF CLOSED COURSE SAILING IN NEWPORT RHODE ISALND.
