HIGH GROUND

Humans have always seemed to been drawn to high ground. Even the children’s game “King of the Mountain”. was a way of teaching the philosophy. It is a phrase in language. A military tactical advantage. A phrase that means high moral standard. The words high ground have significance in all cultures and languages.

SAILING THROUGH LIFE

This is in response to those who asked:”Who are you?” It is a least a dimension.Boats have always been a part of my life. Naturally interwoven with the story of Newport.

HORSEBALL

It became an annual event The “Americans” verses the “French”. Before we left the Pyrenees at the end of the summer there would be a championship game. Our team comprised of my children, myself, and Michel riviere d’arc, who while a true frenchman ( directly descended from Joan of Arc) rounded out the number of our team. Our opponents, rode everyday and competed regularly, and were not about to lose to a pickup team of children and old men. The game was rough with aggressive play. I received a horses head in the jaw; and more than once someone tried to rub me off my horse while dipping for the ball.

Horseball is know as the poor man’s polo. the stirrups are tied together under the horses belly. the reins are knotted. and a soccer ball with six handles is the object of your desire. You must pass the ball between teammates, before attempting to score through a hoop much like that in basketball. Naturally the opposing team tries in any any possible to prevent that from happening.
At the end of the match we all have dinner together.

MY MOTHER-IN-LAW

My mother-in-law, I am a loss for words to adequately express the depth and breadth of my love for her and the love she shined on me. I was accepted unconditionally the day I married her daughter, as if I were her own flesh and blood.

A woman of exceptional charm and grace and intelligence, who defended me even if she felt I was wrong, even when it involved her own daughter and would only tell me later that I ought to apologize. Every conversation I ever had with her is a memory I cherish.

November 2008

I’m back. I have not made a posting since the beginning of November. I have been out of contact, so to speak, without a computer. I was in France; in the Pyrenees Mountains. I had not been there in perhaps 15 years. I was married there, my first child was born there. I am American, born and bred, however my ties to this part of the world are deep and strong. The sounds, smells and sights were all very familiar to me.

The Snow in the Mountains was already so deep that the danger of avalanche was already real. The Mountain in the photo is the Pic Du Midi. with an observatory at the top. Interestingly this peak is exactly on the Greenwich Meridian.
