I crossed the atlantic twice on “Carina” which was launched in the spring of 1969. A year which was famous for Woodstock and the Moon walk. We huddled around the radio at sea to listen to the Moonwalk broadcast. We races the Fastnet and the US team won the Admiral’s Cup that year; finishing second in 1971.

CARINA, THE EARLY YEARS
A story behind every photo. In fact so many stories
CARINA 1971
A recent post by Ian Walker about a visit from the New “Queen Elizabeth” while crossing the Atlantic to Newport in preparation for the next Volvo race reminded me of our past encounters with the “France”, and the “Queen Elizabeth II”; in each case they passenger ships altered course to come by and chat with us.
As indicated by the log entries we were far enough north that it was almost always damp and cold. Martha Smith, was our cook for the crossing and somehow imagined it would be much warmer and packed a bikini.
BILL SHAY’S ASHES ARE COMMITTED TO THE SEA
Shortly after the Gulf Stream during the Bermuda Race, Bill Schneider committed Bill Shay’s ashes to the sea, while Larry Huntington read John Masefield’s “Sea Fever”. Bill was a long time friend and shipmate to many of us. Larry first met Bill at the finish of the 1957 Transatlantic race to Spain. A sober moment in the counterpoint of sun and sea.
